Bongwater, You Don’t Love Me Yet

This is insane!

Ann Magnuson and Kramer really hit their stride with the release of 1991’s The Power of Pussy. So many beloved songs which inspired conversation starters such as, “And what about chicken pussy, is it enticing or something?” or “They have Nick Cave dolls? I want one.”

The Surfers were really at the apex of their career in 1991. Gibby was in full junkie mode and Paul Leary was perennially underrated as a guitarist (but that would all change). The show was a spectacle of fire-breathing and out-of-control stage antics. I started peaking on LSD during the opening act’s set. By the time the band hit the stage with “Graveyard,” the visuals were pretty intense.

R.E.M., Harborcoat/Seven Chinese Brothers

My first show that I got high with my ex-sister-in-law. Weird.

This is Michael Stipes’ autograph that he gave me after a show at the Orpheum in Boston in 1984. It was written on the back of business card that I had for the night club, Spit, in Boston. I’m pretty sure he was high or just a zombie after signing shitloads of autographs outside R.E.M.’s tour bus. He had hair back then.

The The, That Was The Day

It’s as if Jim Fitting wrote the music for this song himself. His harmonica bits are the best part of the song.

Dusk was one of the last great The The albums. The tour featured Boston-based harmonica player, Jim Fitting, who I knew well enough from his previous stint in Treat Her Right. There was no Johnny Marr on this tour — pity.

Pixies, Is She Weird?

I can’t find any video of this live from 1990. Bastards.

It was a homecoming show for Joey Santiago (a Longmeadow native) at this venue in Springfield, Mass. I don’t recall what the circumstances were around having a backstage pass (which my entire entourage was able to benefit from), but I do remember being shy around Kim and sharing a cigarette with her. I hope she doesn’t have Hep C.
